ABOUT ME, & MY LOVE OF WHISKEY!
Here’s a little bit about me. Name’s Brian, 40ish married guy, self employed, lover of all things Irish and lots of things Scottish, living out the in suburbs a bit west of Portland, Oregon. I grew up in Indianapolis, and after I'd had all I could take of Indiana winters and summers I relocated to the Pacific Northwest in January 2011. Nature proved me right as it dropped a blizzard on Indianapolis the day after I left, and it was kind enough to drop an ice storm on it a day later... no I don’t miss it.
I’d always been a beer or vodka drinker most of my life, I love dark beers like stouts and porters, nothing really does beat a cold Guinness pour properly, or so I thought. As a younger man I just never took to dark liquor, but then again I’d never tried any worth drinking. I’ll not insult other brands people may love, but the kind of whiskey and bourbon you drink in college with your lite beer isn’t what we’re here to explore.
Not too long ago I bought a house, moved out to the burbs and I guess I just grew up. Just kidding… I binge watched Parks and Rec on Netflix and Ronald Ulysses Swanson got me thinking about whiskey... good whiskey to be exact. Something about watching that wise and surly Libertarian made me want to get in on the action. Then I saw a video with Nick Offerman, who’s even more interesting than the character he made famous, talking about Lagavulin Scotch Whisky and I was hooked, I had to try it. Here’s that video:
I did a little research and saw that Lagavulin was one of the most popular single malts distilled on the island of Islay (pronounced eye-luh), a western island of Scotland know for some of the peatiest whiskeys around.
